There are over 50 bones in your feet—which is a little under 25% of the bones in your entire body. Due to the massive network of bones and ligaments, a fractured bone in the forefoot or in the toes doesn’t necessarily incapacitate you. In fact, toe (phalanges) fractures can heal without intervention. In cases where they don’t, fractures can contribute to the development of arthritis and leave patients with less mobility.
The most common causes of metatarsal and phalanges fracture include:
- Repetitive stress or impact
- Foot twisting (trip-and-fall injury)
- Direct impact (dropping of heavy load)
- Kicking or swinging the foot at a hard surface
Pain, swelling and bruising are the most common symptoms. If it interferes with your daily life, seek medical treatment. If you delay getting treatment, you can run the risk of developing arthritis, which could limit your mobility and change your gait.
Casts and even surgery may be required in cases of displaced fracture (where bones move out of position due to severe impact). The bone ends of a displaced fracture must be realigned and the bone kept immobile until the healing takes place. If the toe is fractured, your doctor will tape the toe to the adjacent toe to keep it steady. If the broken bone is in your forefoot, you will have to wear a short-leg walking cast or brace for roughly 6-8 weeks.
If the pain returns, surgery is sometimes recommended.
